ALATINE, Ill., May 20 (UPI) – When U.S. families gather to eat, they gather in large numbers around the grill, even for birthdays, a survey indicated.

The 23rd annual Weber GrillWatch Survey indicated 71 percent of U.S. adults own an outdoor grill and/or smoker, and almost three-quarters of U.S grill owners use their grill at least once a week during their grilling season.

Seventy-one percent of American grill owners said they would fire up their backyard grill on Memorial Day, a 10 percent jump from last year’s survey.

“We continue to see a rise in the number of people grilling for nearly all major holidays, including Memorial Day, the Fourth of July at 90 percent, Father’s Day at 53 percent and even birthdays at 76 percent,” Brooke Jones, director of marketing for Weber-Stephen Products LLC, said in a statement.

Weber commissioned Toluna to conduct the survey of 1,000 U.S. adults who own a charcoal, gas or electric outdoor grill or smoker. The sample was divided between 50 percent males and 50 percent females and was balanced demographically to represent households across the United States.

The three foods grilled most often were hamburgers at 73 percent, chicken at 41 percent and steak at 40 percent, the survey said.

Thirty-five percent said they considered dessert the most challenging food to grill followed by fish at 30 percent and pizza at 28 percent.

No further survey details were provided.

LONDON (Reuters) – Health data released on Wednesday provided the clearest evidence to date of the spread of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease from developed nations to poorer regions such as Africa, as lifestyles and diets there change.

The United Nations data showed one in three adults worldwide has raised blood pressure – the cause of around half of all deaths from stroke and heart disease – and the condition affects almost half the adult population in some countries in Africa.

In its annual report on global health, the Geneva-based World Health Organisation (WHO) also said one in 10 adults worldwide has diabetes, an illness that costs billions of dollars to treat and puts sufferers at risk of heart disease, kidney failure and blindness.

While the average global prevalence of diabetes is around 10 percent, the report said, up to a third of the population in some Pacific Island countries have the condition.

Chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease and cancer are often thought of as illnesses which primarily affect people in wealthy nations, where high fat diets, alcohol consumption and smoking are major health risks.

But the WHO says almost 80 percent of deaths from such diseases now occur in low- and middle-income countries.

In Africa, rising smoking rates, a shift towards Western- style diets and less exercise mean chronic or so-called non-communicable diseases are rising rapidly and are expected to surpass other diseases as the most common killers by 2020.

“This report is further evidence of the dramatic increase in the conditions that trigger heart disease and other chronic illnesses, particularly in low- and middle-income countries,” the WHO’s director general Margaret Chan said in a statement with the report.

“In some African countries, as much as half the adult population has high blood pressure.”

This year’s WHO statistical report was the first to include data from all 194 member countries on the percentage of men and women with high blood pressure, or hypertension, and with raised blood sugar levels, a symptom of diabetes.

This report does not examine the causes behind the rising or falling numbers, but seeks to give a snapshot of major diseases and health risks affecting the global population.

In wealthy countries, widespread diagnosis and treatment with low-cost drugs have significantly reduced average blood pressure readings across populations – and this has contributed to a reduction in deaths from heart disease, the WHO said.

But in Africa, more than 40 percent — and in some places up to 50 percent – of adults in many countries are estimated to have high blood pressure.

Most of these people remain undiagnosed, the report said, and yet many could be treated with inexpensive medicines – an intervention that would cut the risk of death and disability from heart disease and stroke.

Obesity is another major issue, the WHO said, with data showing rates of obesity doubling in every region of the world between 1980 and 2008.

“Today, half a billion people – or 12 percent of the world’s population – are considered obese,” said Ties Boerma, the WHO’s director of health Statistics and information systems.

The highest obesity levels are in the Americas, where 26 percent of adults are obese, and the lowest are in south east Asia, at 3 percent of adults.

The report found that women in all parts of the world are more likely to be obese than men, and are therefore at greater risk of diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.

The WHO’s World Health Statistics report is published annually and contains data from 194 countries on a range of health indicators including life expectancy, illnesses and deaths from various diseases, health services, treatments, and risk factors or behaviors that affect health.

World Health Statistics 2012 is available at: http://who.int/entity/gho/publications/world_health_statistics/2012/en/index.html .

Other key trends identified in the report include:

* Maternal deaths:

- In 20 years, the number of maternal deaths has dropped from more than 540,000 in 1990 to less than 290,000 in 2010 – a decline of 47 percent. A third of these deaths were in just two countries – India with 20 percent of the global total, and Nigeria with 14 percent.

* Child deaths:

- Data from 2000 to 2010 show the world has made significant progress in reducing child deaths, cutting them from almost 10 million under-fives in 2000 to 7.6 million in 2010. Falls in numbers of deaths from diarrheal disease and measles have been particularly striking, the WHO said.

* Death registration:

- Only 34 countries – representing 15 percent of the world’s population – produce high-quality cause-of-death data. In low and middle-income countries, fewer than 10 percent of deaths are registered.

ANN ARBOR, Mich., May 19 (UPI) – Discarding unused medications in the trash is a better way to limit the risk of poisoning and reduce air and water pollution, U.S. researchers suggest.

First author Sherri Cook, a doctoral student at the University of Michigan, and Nancy Love, a professor in the department of civil and environmental engineering, compared the total emissions created by take-back, trash and toilet disposal methods of leftover medications.

In most cases, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends throwing the medications away, but only if people don’t have access to a take-back program. Flushing unused pills down the toilet is no longer advised, as the active ingredients in drugs have been found in drinking water and aquatic environments, but about 40 percent still flush unused medication down the toilet, Cook explained.

In medication take-back programs, the returned drugs are incinerated as hazardous waste, Cook said.

“National policy seems to be changing to support take-back programs, and we don’t know if that’s justified,” Cook said in a statement.

The study, published in Environmental Science & Technology, found if everyone trashed their extra drugs, the amount of active pharmaceutical ingredients in the environment would be significantly reduced.

The researchers encourage policymakers to focus on getting more people to get rid of medicines by trash, rather than take-back.

FRIDAY, May 18 (HealthDay News) — Eating a healthy, calorie-controlled diet during pregnancy can help prevent excessive weight gain and cut the risk of obstetric complications, researchers report.

In Europe and the United States, up to 40 percent of women gain more than the recommended weight during pregnancy and this excess weight is associated with a number of major health problems, according to background information in the study published online May 17 in the BMJ.

In the report, an international team of researchers reviewed the findings of 44 studies that included more than 7,200 women and found that dietary intervention resulted in an average reduction in weight gain during pregnancy of nearly 8.8 pounds, compared with 1.5 pounds for exercise, and 2.2 pounds for exercise and diet combined.

Dietary intervention alone also provided the most benefit in preventing serious pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia (a sudden spike in the mother’s blood pressure after the 20th week of pregnancy), diabetes and premature birth, according to lead researcher Dr. Shakila Thangaratinam from Queen Mary, University of London, and colleagues.

The study authors concluded that dietary and lifestyle interventions in pregnancy improve outcomes for both mother and baby.

However, an accompanying editorial suggested that there is not enough evidence to support dietary or any other type of intervention.

“At a time when more than half the women of reproductive age in the United Kingdom are overweight or obese, any analysis of weight management interventions in pregnancy is timely and welcome,” Lucilla Poston and Lucy Chappell of St. Thomas’ Hospital in London wrote in the editorial. But, they noted, the study does not provide the evidence needed to reassess guidelines for weight management in pregnancy.

The editorialists added that several ongoing studies may provide more insight into effective ways to prevent excessive weight gain during pregnancy.

WASHINGTON, May 18 (UPI) – U.S. health officials say the first national Hepatitis Testing Day, set for this weekend, is meant to remind people to get tested for chronic viral hepatitis.

“Millions of Americans have chronic viral hepatitis, but up to 75 percent of those infected do not know it. The federal government’s action plan for combating the silent epidemic of viral hepatitis designated Saturday as the first-ever National Hepatitis Testing Day,” Dr. Howard Koh, the assistant secretary for health for the Department of Health and Human Services, said in a statement. “This day is part of a larger government-wide initiative to educate people about viral hepatitis and to encourage everyone to talk to their healthcare provider about whether they are at risk.”

Thousands of Americans die every year from hepatitis-related liver disease and liver cancer, but lifesaving treatments are available that can limit disease progression and prevent cancer deaths, Roh said.

“In order to increase the number of people who get tested for viral hepatitis, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention created an online Hepatitis Risk Assessment tool — at www.cdc.gov/hepatitis/riskassessment/ — which the Surgeon General and I are promoting through a series of public service announcements,” Roh said. “This online tool will assess an individual’s risk for viral hepatitis and generate a summary of recommendations for testing and vaccination that people can print and take to their doctor to discuss.”

Hungry writers had the distinct pleasure of venturing to Petrossian Boutique & Cafe to sample the luxury eatery’s new offerings. We nibbled politely (then devoured with backs turned) on zesty cookies and muffins available now through the end of Summer. Here’s what we cheerfully ate:

Parmesan shortbread with fennel (.75 per cookie) are scrumptious hexagons with the perfect blend of salty-sweet taste. The Parmesan Rosemary (.75 per cookie) is a petite oval that is robust and rightly spiced. The Lemon Thyme Muffin (.25) is dense yet moist. Savory and sweet as well, this is a truly flavorful and satisfying mini-cake. The cookies are good quick snacks for on-the-go New Yorkers, or as nice sides with a soup at home. As for the muffins, they are excellent for breakfast or anytime special treats.

And we can’t forget the jams (.00 each) – glorious spreadable perfection in glass jars! The preserves have a pure, subtly chunky, texture with divine taste. All the fruits and vegetables are cut and processed by hand using fresh, quality ingredients, locally sourced when possible. French methods are used in making these jams, allowing fruit to macerate overnight to coax out the luscious flavors of berries, stone fruits and vegetables.

Jam varieties include Raspberry Pepper, Florida Strawberry, Plum Ginger Apricot, and Raspberry Chocolate. Wonderful as toppings or go get a silver spoon – they are that fabulous. Now if you don’t share, each jar may last you a week.

Petrossian Boutique and Café is just a few doors from Petrossian Restaurant. Open every day, the Boutique features a vast selection of Petrossian’s renowned caviar, foie gras, smoked fish and other delicacies, as well as a fine selection of chocolates and teas. Bakery items are made fresh daily and on the premises.

BETHESDA, Md., May 17 (UPI) – A study of 400,000 U.S. men and women ages 50-71 found those who drank coffee — caffeinated or decaffeinated — had a lower risk of death, researchers say.

The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found those who drank coffee were less likely to die from heart disease, respiratory disease, stroke, injuries, accidents, diabetes and infections, although the association was not seen for cancer.

Neal Freedman of the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, and colleagues at the NCI and AARP tracked the study participants from 1995-1996 until the date they died or Dec. 31, 2008, whichever came first.

The researchers also found the association between coffee and reduction in risk of death increased with the amount of coffee consumed — those who consumed three or more cups of coffee per day had approximately a 10 percent lower risk of death.

Coffee drinking was not associated with cancer mortality among women, but there was a slight and only marginally statistically significant association of heavier coffee intake with increased risk of cancer death among men, the researchers said.

“Although we cannot infer a causal relationship between coffee drinking and lower risk of death, we believe these results do provide some reassurance that coffee drinking does not adversely affect health,” Freedman said in a statement.

The WHO’s World Health Statistics report is published annually and contains data from 194 countries on a range of health indicators including life expectancy, illnesses and deaths from various diseases, health services, treatments, and risk factors or behaviours that affect health.
